Researchers re-create pre-Columbian sounds

MEXICO CITY - Scientists were fascinated by the ghostly find: a human skeleton buried in an Aztec temple with a clay, skull-shaped whistle in each bony hand.
But no one blew into the noisemakers for nearly 15 years. When someone finally did, the shrill, windy screech made the spine tingle.
If death had a sound, this was it.
Roberto Velazquez believes the Aztecs played this mournful wail from the so-called Whistles of Death before they were sacrificed to the gods.
The 66-year-old mechanical engineer has devoted his career to recreating the sounds of his pre-Columbian ancestors, producing hundreds of replicas of whistles, flutes and wind instruments unearthed in Mexico’s ruins.
For years, many archaeologists who uncovered ancient noisemakers dismissed them as toys. Museums relegated them to warehouses. But while most studies and exhibits of ancient cultures focus on how they looked, Velazquez said the noisemakers provide a rare glimpse into how they sounded.

“We’ve been looking at our ancient culture as if they were deaf and mute,” he said. “But I think all of this is tied closely to what they did, how they thought.”

Velazquez is part of a growing field of study that includes archaeologists, musicians and historians. Medical doctors are interested too, believing the Aztecs may have used sound to treat illnesses.
Noisemakers made of clay, turkey feathers, sugar cane, frog skins and other natural materials were an integral part of pre-Columbian life, found at nearly every Mayan site.

A replica of a skull shaped whistle, created by pre-Columbian sounds expert Roberto Velazquez, in Mexico City.

The Aztecs sounded the low, foghorn hum of conch shells at the start of ceremonies and possibly during wars to communicate strategies. Hunters likely used animal-shaped ocarinas to produce throaty grunts that lured deer.
The modern-day archaeologists who came up with the term Whistles of Death believe they were meant to help the deceased journey into the underworld, while tribes are said to have emitted terrifying sounds to fend off enemies, much like high-tech crowd-control devices available today.

Experts also believe pre-Columbian tribes used some of the instruments to send the human brain into a dream state and treat certain illnesses. The ancient whistles could guide research into how rhythmic sounds alter heart rates and states of consciousness.

Phaistos Disc

According to mythology, Phaistos was the seat of king Radamanthis, brother of king Minos. It was also the city that gave birth to the great wise man and soothsayer Epimenidis, one of the seven wise men of the ancient world.
Excavations by archaeologists have unearthed ruins of the Neolithic times (3.000 B.C.).
During the Minoan times, Phaistos was a very important city-state. Its dominion, at its peak, stretched from Lithinon to Psychion and included the Paximadia islands. The city participated to the Trojan war and later became one of the most important cities-states of the Dorian period.
Phaistos continued to flourish during Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic times. It was destroyed by the Gortynians during the 3rd century B.C. In spite of that, Phaistos continued to exist during the Roman period.
Phaistos had two ports, Matala and Kommos.

Since 1900, continuous archaeological excavations from the Italian Archaeological School, have brought to light the magnificent Minoan palace of Phaistos with its great royal courts, the great staircases, the theatre, the storerooms and the famous disk of Phaistos.

The first palace was built at 2.000 B.C. This palace was destroyed at 1.700 B.C. by an earthquake. It was built again, more luxurious and magnificent and it was destroyed again, probably by another earthquake, at 1.400 B.C.

The disc of Phaistos is the most important example of hieroglyphic inscription from Crete .

The Phaistos Disc (Phaistos Disk, Phaestos Disc) is a disk of fired clay from the Minoan palace of Phaistos, likely dating to the middle or late Minoan Bronze Age (2nd millennium BC). It is about 15 cm in diameter and covered on both sides with a spiral of stamped symbols. Its purpose and meaning, and even its original geographical place of manufacture, remain disputed, making it one of the most famous mysteries of archaeology. This unique object is now on display at the archaeological museum of Heraklion in Crete, Greece.

UFOs invade NT town in Australia

A SMALL Territory community is still reeling with shock after four UFOs descended on their Outback homes.

Families spent hours in fear as what appeared to be three spaceships hovered in the distance with another just metres above their houses.

The drama at Marlinja, population 112 and 730km south of Darwin, began at 8pm on Sunday.
Resident Janie Dixon said it started as an "ordinary" night.

"The kids were on the basketball courts, shooting a few hoops, and I was indoors talking to my two nieces when we heard a strange, loud noise," she said.

"We ran outside but at first we couldn't see anything -- it was really dark and we could hear the sound.
"The sound was horrible. It sounded like something was going past.
"We thought it was a jet. I saw what I thought at first was the evening star, the first star you usually see at night.

"But then we saw three red lights in the distance, and the sound kept getting louder.
"The ground felt like it was shaking, so we ran inside and shut the doors.
"My nephew and niece were looking out through curtains. The thing came closer, circled around the basketball courts and then came so close above our house.

"The kids at the basketball courts ran -- two girls stood there
"They tried to see what it was but all they could see was this bright red light in the pitch black."
Ms Dixon said the UFO hovered above the homes for what seemed like a couple of hours.
She said at one stage the phone rang, but went dead when she tried to answer it.
"Then the light in the house became so bright, it was like we were sitting in a football stadium," she said.

"After a while, after the things all disappeared... I think it was about 11pm by then.
"We went outside and were just sitting around drinking tea and talking about it all. The kids were put to bed.
"We heard the noise again and it came back, but disappeared again moments later.
"We were all really frightened.
"It was a big shock and I couldn't sleep."

Super fast silent UFO pursued by military Chinook helicopter in Washington USA.

25 June 2008

WASHINGTON, USA - A military helicopter was photographed pursuing a super fast UFO in Washington State, America last week.

A High resolution image taken at a speed that freezes the rotor blades of the helicopter could not capture more than a blur of the UFO being pursued.

James Gilliland's ECETI Ranch is the location where UFO enthusiasts gather to watch "lightships" at night and hyper velocity UFOs by day.

Mr Gilliland is often ridiculed by the Billy Meier UFO group ( religion ) which appears to claim exclusive rights to authorized UFO encounters. Mr Gilliland said "These photographs were taken by guests with multiple eyewitnesses just a few of hundreds of photos and 70 hours of footage along with witnesses like triple PhD Boeing Engineers, Air Force Base Commanders, pilots like Pierre and Nigel as well as physicists from all walks of life."

"This group is well known for attacking all other researchers, contactees, crop circle researchers and anyone outside of their camp. There are several total contradictions in their story, the contacts stopped in the late 70's according to his video and his sons testimony at the International UFO Congress and his Contact notes say there are over 7,000 people being contacted by his' "Advanced ETs" which seem to not always tell the truth"

"As Billy Meier being the only contacted and prophet of, "Spirit Form"what they call God I find this totally ridiculous. Considering his history of being in prison, joining the foreign legion to get out, deserting, then bounty hunting, etc it seems God would have made a little better choice."

"His actions and the overwhelming evidence proves to the contrary. Not just the evidence here but around the world. Beware of anyone who says they have exclusive rights and connections to off world visitors and God."

"I believe they did have contact, took some great photos and video but something went very wrong with this group. Maybe the exclusive keeps the members paying on a regular basis part of their income and not looking elsewhere?"

The United States government knows something about the UFOs seen over Washington last week as it is the only entity that owns a black Chinook like the one trying to pursue the UFO.

Is the UFO from earth, space, a black ops budget or another world ?

The military know something as this light observation helicopter inspected witnesses at ECETI Ranch.

UFO Photographed During San Marcos Fair
Ana Luisa Cid writes: Mr. Mario Castaneda Marquez took this photo during the San Marcos Fair in the state of Aguascalientes, Mexico. According to his eyewitness account, it was taken during the preparation of the Los Voladores de Papantla ritual in front of the San Marcos Church. The date was April 30, 2008, the time 12:35 hrs., and a DSC P-43 Sony camera was used.

Escalante from writes:Caracas - Venezuela. 06/21/08. On Saturday, June 15 in the afternoon I was able to photograph fortuitously two objects with a strange appearance in the vicinity of Cerro El Avila around San Jose - Cotiza, while attempting to record the wake of an aircraft after it crossed the skies over Caracas. The vehicle moved in a southeast - northeast direction and viceversa, generating a sort of "gaseous tissue" in the heights, white in color and of broad dimensions, which took approximately 30 minutes to vanish. The objects were photographed with a Panasonic Lumix digital camera, 6.0 mpix, and maintained a considerable distance with regard to the flight trajectory followed by the aircraft.(Translation (c) 2008, S. Couple: UFO Dive-Bombed Us on Remote Highway

An elderly Australian couple claim they had a close encounter with a UFO while traveling along a Northern Territory highway.
Lawrie Fuchs, 70, and his wife Gwen, 69, were returning to their home town of Elliott following a trip to the neighboring state of Queensland last Friday when they say the UFO swooped them as they drove along the Barkly Highway.
Estimated to be about 20 feet wide, they say the object passed the vehicle with such speed that its slipstream forced their Mazda sedan into the middle of the road.
They were traveling in a westerly direction when the incident occurred.
"It was about 4 p.m. when suddenly we saw a dark, silvery flash and heard a loud sound as it passed," Mr. Fuchs said.
"It was traveling at a terrific speed, very bloody fast, and there was no warning at all. I'm sure it dive-bombed us but I can't imagine why."

UFO enthusiasts got a boost overnight when Welsh police confirmed that one of their helicopter crews had spotted an "unusual aircraft" flying over Cardiff earlier this month.

An investigation into the sighting had been launched, they said.

The police clarification came after tabloid newspaper The Sun reported a UFO had "attacked" a police helicopter, following it for several miles over the Bristol Channel.

"The pilot banked sharply to avoid being hit, then launched into a high-speed pursuit," the tabloid reported.

"But he was forced to give up the chase as the helicopter's fuel ran low - and the UFO escaped."

The helicopter crew had described the object as "flying saucer-shaped and circled by flashing lights," it added.

That description was rather more dramatic than the official police version, which said: "South Wales Police can confirm its air support unit sighted an unusual aircraft."

"This was reported to the relevant authorities for their investigation," they added in a brief statement, avoiding the use of the term "UFO", or Unidentified Flying Object.

At the time of the incident, the helicopter with three men on board was waiting to land at the St Athan RAF base near Cardiff.

South Wales Police denied there was a pursuit and indicated that the helicopter crew was never in any danger.

A Ministry of Defence spokesman said it had heard nothing about the incident.

"But it is certainly not advisable for police helicopters to go chasing what they think are UFOs," the spokesman said.

In Russia, sometimes it rains cement

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian air force planes dropped a 25-kg (55-lb) sack of cement on a suburban Moscow home last week while seeding clouds to prevent rain from spoiling a holiday, Russian media said on Tuesday.
"A pack of cement used in creating ... good weather in the capital region ... failed to pulverize completely at high altitude and fell on the roof of a house, making a hole about 80-100 cm (2.5-3 ft)," police in Naro-Fominsk told agency RIA-Novosti.
Ahead of major public holidays the Russian Air Force often dispatches up to 12 cargo planes carrying loads of silver iodide, liquid nitrogen and cement powder to seed clouds above Moscow and empty the skies of moisture.
A spokesman for the Russian Air Force refused to comment.

South Pasadena Couple Capture UFO Fireballs On Video

see video@

SOUTH PASADENA - Great balls of fire.
At about 11:15 p.m. Wednesday, Charles Marcum and his girlfriend were on the balcony of their condominium in Pasadena when they saw a round, fiery object traveling slowly across the sky.
"She turned the same time I did and I said, 'What the heck is that?'" Marcum said. "It looked like a fireball."
Marcum scurried to the bedroom to get a camcorder and started taping the object. It traversed the horizon in a direction that appeared to be north to south, and was at the point of disappearing when another one appeared from the north, Marcum said.
As he did the first, Marcum followed the object with his electronic eye, and was about to turn the machine off when it, too, was about to vanish. Then a third one appeared, he said.
"I noticed something strange," Marcum said. "They were all spaced at about the same space between each other, at the same altitude, and were traveling at the same trajectory and speed."
"I'm almost 64 and I've never seen that," he said. "I thought it was man-made because it was following a pattern."
Authorities had no explanation for the objects, however.
"We can't speculate as to what they were," said Lt. Rebecca Heyse, spokeswoman for MacDill Air Force Base. All of the base's aircraft has been accounted for and they are all on the ground before 11 p.m., she said.
Marcum is curious as to why no one else has reportedly seen the objects.
"I am absolutely floored that the phones weren't ringing off the hook at the police department and fire department and so forth," Marcum said. "I can't believe it. It was a nice clear night, a full moon and no wind."
A dispatcher who worked Wednesday night said there were no reports on the objects that came into the county dispatch system.

Summer and Saucers!

It was my twelfth summer and the living was easy—or so I thought. We lived on the river located off the bay surrounding the south coast of Long Island, New York. It was the early sixties and life was pretty much picture-perfect—for a twelve-year-old, anyway.

My parents had good friends. Long-term friends. In fact, they grew up with them as children and now, as married couples, found themselves living but a few houses apart. My parents and the Codys would often get together and do all kinds of things from boat rides on the river to grilling on our patios to going into town for dinner and a movie. Both families got along and enjoyed many fun adventures together.

Mr. Cody was a successful businessman who worked near New York City and commuted back and forth via the infamous Long Island Railroad. Mrs. Cody was a homemaker and perfectionist. Her house was always spotless, her children behaved and clean, her dinners delicious and her figure and attire always perfect and in style. She was serious in nature and frankly, I think took herself a bit too seriously. I think I could count on my hands the times I recall Mrs. Cody ever really being relaxed or letting loose to share a good laugh. She was a very lovely woman but a tinge uptight.

The Codys were extremely conservative people and never prone to flights of fancy or believing anything without hard facts to back it. They were a serious, successful couple who lived a conservative, careful, well-planned life of thoughtful reflection and controlled emotion. My parents enjoyed their company. My father and Mr. Cody would spend hours playing checkers while the ladies discussed the local gossip over cocktails on my parents’ screened back porch or the Codys’ deck or the Codys’ large boat. Life was good, solid and routine for us all.

It was shortly after the Fourth of July. We had just enjoyed a big barbeque in our yard to celebrate. I would say it was about ten days later when it happened. It was a Saturday night—warm with a beautiful star-filled sky. My parents had been in town with the Codys for dinner as it was Mr. and Mrs. Cody’s anniversary. After dinner, my parents returned home to find my grandparents and me playing cards out on our screened porch. My parents sat down to join us.

The night was lovely. We could enjoy the star-lit night and the view of the river from where we all sat on the back porch. The Codys had dropped off my parents and then decided to drive down to the community dock to sit in their comfortable, big-finned Cadillac and take in the night sky as a fitting finish to their anniversary celebration.

The first to notice it was my grandmother. She spoke first to my grandfather. “Frank, come look at this,” she said. My grandfather walked over to the back of our porch that overlooked the river. My grandfather then called to my parents, “Come look at this. What do you think is doing that?” My parents walked over and I followed.

The night sky had turned a wild bright red with deep pinks, purples and oranges pulsating as if in time to music across the river. It was odd to say the least. Light beams would shoot along the top of the water like ribbons of color falling from the sky. My father said to my grandfather, “Let’s go have a look.” They started to head for the door with all of us in tow when my dad stopped us and said, “Oh no you don’t. You all stay here until we see what’s going on.”

We stood and watched in silence as the two men walked to the edge of our property which met the river. We could see them looking up in the air and then straining to see around the bend of the river toward the direction of all these incredible lights. A few minutes later they came back to the house and said the lights were moving and bright but they could not see down the river to determine what was causing them. My family and I watched the lights for a while longer from the porch and then decided to go to bed. We would find out in the morning what was causing them.

The next day my dad was already up and gone when I finally awoke at noon. I slept late often on summer mornings. It was my way of getting back at the world for the school year starting so early. I was eating breakfast when my father returned home. He looked worried and concerned. He had my mother pour him coffee and then began to tell her an incredible story: “I went over to the Codys this morning to see if they knew what those incredible lights were last night. Sam (Mr. Cody) was having a terrible time with Liz (Mrs. Cody). He asked me to run into town and pick up something he had the doctor call in to calm her down.” At this point, my mother came and sat quietly at the table across from my dad as I continued to munch down my cereal.

My father continued, “They rode down to the dock last night after they dropped us off. They said with the top down on the Caddy they could get a wonderful view of the night sky and the river. They rode down to the dock edge where two other cars were also parked—their occupants also taking in the beautiful summer night sky. Sam said they were sitting there only a few minutes soaking in the night when they noticed a light coming in off the bay at the mouth of the river toward them.”

“It happened quickly,” Sam had told my father. My father continued, “In a matter of seconds they could see the light take form and right there, hovering in front of them over the river, was a huge craft—a huge flying saucer.”

My mother sat with her mouth hanging open as my dad continued the story. My spoon fell into my bowl and I just listened. Mr. Cody had told my father that he and the other people parked at the river immediately became terrified and tried to start their cars in order to drive away. Mr. Cody felt very vulnerable as his car top was down and he could not get the motor running in order to close the top for at least some protection. He had explained to my father that the huge flying saucer just floated with a low, dull hum over the river for about a minute when the light show started. The body of the craft then began to change colors—first blue then red then orange and then back to blue. Mrs. Cody began to panic and scream and tried to crawl over the side of the car. When Mr. Cody could not start his own car, he noticed the other people in the other cars were running into the wooded areas adjacent to the dock as their cars also refused to start. He grabbed Mrs. Cody and they did the same.

They ran into the overbrush and found a large fallen tree. He pushed Liz under the tree and threw himself on top of her. From there they could see the river and that this craft was now shooting brilliant rays of incredible neon light up, down and across the water. They hid and watched in total fear. The craft continued to do this for about ten minutes. It then turned back to its original dull grey color and as quickly as it had made its way down the river, it made its way back up the river and took off into the night sky. Sam had told my dad that within seconds it went from being right in front of them to becoming a tiny dot of light barely visible in the sky above them.

One of the owners of the other cars had made his way back to the dock and the car he had abandoned just moments before. The others all watched as he started his car. Everybody then ran to their respective cars and sped away from that dock, engines roaring and wheels screeching.

My father finished talking and we all just sat there. I then broke the silence by bursting into tears and sobbing as I too was scared. My mother comforted me but I could tell my parents were frightened too.

A few weeks passed with this being the main talk of the community. The people were anxious and looking for reason or at least explanation from the local police. Instead, the only visible response was the entire experience becoming the laugh of the town as if we “river people” had gone nutty.

My father kept his shotgun loaded, I noticed, and started to lock the house tightly at night. The other people seemed on edge too and we all seemed to stay closer to home more often. The worst of it was Mrs. Cody. She started to need help every day with her ordeal. She started taking lots of pills and drinking heavily. This once well-groomed, conservative lady was now often messy, drunk and falling down. Mr. Cody was missing work and finding it impossible to leave her alone for more than a few hours at a time. My parents were often upset and my mom received calls nearly every day asking for her to go check on Mrs. Cody. My world seemed to be turned upside down by this night of lights in the summer sky.

Eventually the summer turned to fall and school started. Mr. Cody was unable to pull Mrs. Cody back to her right senses and decided to buy a smaller house closer to his work and other family members so that he could better care for Mrs. Cody. He kept his river home but seemed only to ride out and check it alone on weekends. We never saw Mrs. Cody much after that.

My parents decided to sell our river home the following summer. I am unsure how much this incident contributed to their decision but we did leave our riverside haven and moved into town near more people and far from the water’s edge.

I have no idea what happened that night over the river. I do not know what was there or what made Mrs. Cody snap like she did. I do know she lived out the rest of her life broken from what she witnessed that night over the river. I often wonder how many other people like the Codys have similar stories about strange things seen on lovely summer nights. ♥

Chubee: I Was a Teenage Chupacabra by Paul Dale Roberts

Sometimes my interviews and investigations can fall into the category of 'X-Files'. I get all of the weird and bizarre assignments from Shan. Shan is aka Shannon 'Ms. Macabre' McCabe of H.P.I. (Haunted & Paranormal Investigations International). On June 13, 2008, Friday, I was headed out to interview two people with very bizarre claims. As I drove to Coffee Books on Watt Avenue, I thought to myself, no wonder people at my work call me 'Spooky'. I am always searching for that key that will open up the gates to the paranormal realm and allow me to place all the pieces of the puzzle together for the ultimate truth of what is out there.
As I reached Coffee Books, I spotted an unusual man. A man with a long white beard that was centerpiece with a band to give his white beard a curvation appearance. A man with excited blue eyes and a shaven head. A man that calls himself 'Steve 'Lobo' Wolff. Steve tells me he is a Vietnam Vet as he leans up against his camper and sips his coffee. He tells me that what I will experience this day is considered by him as the 9th Wonder of the World. I can only wonder to myself, what happened to the 8th Wonder of the World? He tells me that he constantly receives attacks on the energy level. That he is witness to the military having stealth modem capabilities of manipulating energy. He tells me of a shadow government that is out to create the New World Order. This shadow government with it's elite military personnel are after Steve, so he claims. He goes on to tell me that the military is using a large frame computer and are sending out signals to the populace, which causes us to change and to evolve. The military is aware of the many dimensions around us, they are aware of the Multiverse. Steve tells me that the military feels he is a threat, because of his unusual energy patterns, he can change the rhythm of their 'cha-cha'. He tells me that they have placed a tracking device into his body and are now actually trying to kill him. At times he feels like he is being ripped apart. He has witnessed birds popping up from nowhere, because those birds come from another dimension. The military has caused the energy around him to swirl and at times has lifted his camper four wheels off the ground. After I listened to Steve's story, I asked him one thing. Can I see proof. He tells me to look at the energy around him and tell him what I see. I told him, I see 'nothing'. Steve tells me that his story will change the world. I tell Steve. "Yes, a story like that can change the world, but there is one requirement. The requirement is proof." I started to walk away and Steve says: "Well, the next time we meet I will have proof!" I thought to myself..."this was our last meeting Steve."

My next meeting was with another man, that I will simply call 'Chubee'. I met Chubee at Starbucks downtown. His story is very incredible. His speech pattern was hard to understand, because his tongue is deformed. He showed me his tongue and it almost seemed tubular. He claims that he is a hybrid. Half alien Gray and half human. I did notice that his eyes were somewhat slanted and large. I am not saying I believe him, but he does have an unusual appearance. He claims he was raised in an underground base in Puerto Rico. As a hybrid, the government is working alongside of the Grays to create an army of super soldiers. He tells me that many underground secret bases of the military are connected to hollow Earth. He goes on to tell me that natural hollow Earth entrances can be found at places like Mount Shasta, which leads to the Agharthean City of Telos, the Dero Caves in Indonesia, the Giza Pyramid in Egypt, Kentucky Mammoth Caves, the Himalayan Mountains of Tibet and that we can also get to the City of Shing-Wa via an entrance near the China/Mongolian border. He goes on to elaborate that there are also entrances in Brazil and India, but he is not sure where they are. He went to a school in one of the cities in Hollow Earth. Experiments were done on him by the Grays and military, in which he had a strong craving for blood. The military allowed him with observation comb the landscape of Puerto Rico to seek out food. Chubee said that at the time his skin was scaly and he had spines that went from the top of his head and down his back. He could leap a great distance and would hunt out dogs, cats, goats to drink their blood. The military observed his movements and kept a tracking device on him. They used this information for his ability to attack and be agile on a battlefield. Chubee tells me that the experiments that were conducted on him lasted from the age of 12 to the age of 19. Chubee claims that the military is experimenting with DNA manipulation and learned these techniques from the Grays. He claims that aliens that were here during the dawn of mankind (not the Grays) were manipulating DNA to create creatures like the Centaur. Half man and half horse. The Centaur's purpose was to be used on a battlefield. Chubee was rejected from the military's experiments because his human DNA started to override his other DNA. His spikes started to fall off, his scales fell off and skin tissue that resembled human skin over took his body. He became more human like and his craving of blood decreased. His agility decreased and he found himself being 'humanlike'. The military had no more use for him. Through a series of 'mind warping', the military felt he forgot his years with the secret military base and allowed him to go into society with false memories of being raised in Puerto Rico by normal parents and going to school. He was constantly assisted by strangers (that he now feels were the military) in obtaining jobs, finding an apartment, etc.

He claims I am the first person to learn this story and he has never told anyone. He discovered his past life with the military and the Grays through a series of dreams. Now the dreams have stopped and a flood of memories of what he used to be has invaded his consciousness. Chubee now resides in a town in Northern California and is making a living driving a truck. He claims friends brought him to Northern California and found him a job as a truck driver. His friends he believes are the secret military. Chubee is now 23 years old.
On my research of the Chupacabra, the first purported attacks occurred in March 1995 in Puerto Rico. But, the Chupacabra legend can go even further. In 1975 there were reported killings in a small town called Moca that was attributed to the El Vampiro de Moca or The Vampire of Moca. Many farm animals were found dead, drained of their blood and small circular incisions were found.

The Ring!

This is a very strange story. I think of it often and always fill with that fear one feels when experiencing one of those “close calls” in life.

I was 23 at the time. I was married and had a three year-old son. I was just a young woman like any other. I stayed home with my child, took care of my little apartment and worked part-time from home doing assorted little boring jobs. One night after dinner I received a call from my older sister. She wanted me to go shopping with her at the big department store in town. My husband was home looking after my son and so I decided to go. I was happy to get away for a little shopping time with my sister. I quickly combed my wild, messy hair and slipped on my shoes then waited at the door for my sister’s car horn to sound.

My sister and I shopped all over the big store. We both bought a blouse and wandered around looking at everything else the store offered. My sister wandered off to purchase her favorite perfume. I walked over to the next department which was fine jewelry. I had--and still do have--a weakness for rings. At that point in my life, I owned only a few very nice rings. My parents had given me a beautiful birthstone when I turned 18 and, of course, I had my wedding ring. My wedding ring consisted of a wide gold band with a twisted line of small diamonds across the face of it. On the inside of the ring was engraved my wedding date. It was a nice ring but not a unique or expensive ring. There were other rings around at the time similar to mine.

I started to look at all the beautiful jewelry and I especially noticed the rings. I had always wanted a big diamond ring and loved just looking at them and dreaming of the day I might own one. The store was pretty quiet while we were there. Very few other customers were in the store that night. The sales lady was leaning against the glass case of rings, watching me as I carefully looked at all the diamonds and bands. She walked over and asked if I wanted to see any of them. I told her I was just looking. She mentioned a 75 % off sale on two of the diamond rings and said, “Here, let me show you the two on this incredible markdown.” Not being strong enough to say no, I let her take out a velvet-covered board of rings and hand me the two discounted rings to try on.

The rings were beautiful. I slid off my wedding band, laid it down on the velvet board right in front of me and slid both rings onto my left hand. Oh, how beautiful both of the rings looked! I wanted to simply tell her to “wrap one up” and then waltz home with the big beautiful diamond ring in the department store bag. I looked at my hand longingly, then removed the rings, handed them back to the sales lady, picked up my wedding ring, and then placed my ring back on my left hand.

My sister called from the next counter. I thanked the woman who had shown me the rings and then headed toward my sister. The only other thing we did that night was stop at the local ice cream shop where my sister treated us both to a double-scoop ice cream cone.

The next morning I woke up late. I could hear my son talking to my mother in the living room. I lifted myself from the bed to find I had a violent headache. I walked into the living room to find my son had let my mother into the house. We lived in an apartment at the time built onto my parents’ home. My mom often came in and out during the day. My mother said to me on this day, “It’s 10:30. Are you all right? You look awful. Didn’t you know the baby was awake and walking around the house?” My son then added, “I was calling you, Mommy.” I had not heard my son, could not believe I had slept that late, and my head felt as if it were breaking in half--the pain was so intense. Before I could respond to my mother, I turned, ran down the hall and became sick. Sick was actually being modest. I vomited so much I thought I would turn inside out. My mother stayed with me all day. I laid in my bed unable to stand, walk, eat or drink. I just wanted this unbelievable sickness to end.

Eventually, my husband came home. His plan for dealing with the situation was to take my son to my parents’ house and send my mom back to cope with me. My mom sat with me all night. By morning I was no better. I still could not stand or even drink. My mother and father insisted that my husband take me to the hospital emergency room as my flesh was turning a sort of blue-green tone.
I spent that day in the hospital. It seemed to be a virus or maybe food poisoning. I just wanted to get better. After two more days in the hospital, I was allowed to return home. I was still very ill. I could eat a bit and walk when helped but I still needed to spend almost all of my day in bed. My family was very concerned. I needed someone with me at all times as my balance was off and I fell twice. I was extremely ill. One night my husband was feeding my son. I was lying on the couch in the living room listening to them talk while he coaxed my son into taking bites of his grilled cheese sandwich. As I laid there my hands began to throb very painfully. I twisted my wedding ring, trying to ease the discomfort, and then decided to take it off completely. My hand hurt so much even the ring was too painful to keep on. I slid the ring off my finger and placed it on the coffee table in front of me.

As I laid my head back down on the couch pillow, I became eye level with the coffee table. It gave me a different and very clear view of my ring. I just kept looking at my ring. It looked funny to me. I pushed myself up and grabbed my ring to inspect it more carefully. I felt a chill run down my spine as I held it in front of my eyes. This ring--the ring that had been on my finger since I left that department store--was not my ring at all. I held it up toward the light and looked inside the band. There I found three strange symbols engraved into the gold. It was 24k gold and thicker than my wedding ring. This ring looked very much like my own as it had a similar, almost identical twist of diamonds on its face but it was, without question, NOT MY RING!
I knew in my soul that this ring was the reason I was so ill. I called my husband and showed him the ring. He looked and asked what I did with my wedding band. I told him over and over everything that happened at the department store. I could see he was shaken and confused. I also noticed that almost immediately, after removing the ring, I started to feel better.

I called my parents and asked them to come over. I told them the entire shopping trip story and showed them this strange ring. It made me very uneasy to realize my wedding band was gone and I had been walking around wearing this strange ring.

My dad called the department store. He asked them not if they had found a wedding band, but if they were missing one. The jewelry store manager told him everything was in order and nothing was missing. My dad then asked if he could ask the saleslady, on duty the night of our shopping trip, if anything odd had occurred during her shift. My father’s face turned white as he listened on the phone to the jewelry manager’s reply. My dad hung up the phone and turned to us and said, “The manager just told me there wasn’t any sales lady on duty in the jewelry department that night. The regular lady called in ill so they posted three large signs to go to the front desk for help in that department that night.” My mother called my sister who lived only a few blocks away and asked her to come over for a few minutes. My father picked up the ring and placed it inside a plastic bag and sat it on the table next to the front door. I was now able to sit up and so my mother prepared some soup for me. My husband sat there stunned in the aftermath of this bizarre revelation.

My sister came over with her husband and we repeated the entire story to them. She walked over, looked at the ring, and said, “This isn’t your ring.” And she added, “There were no signs in the jewelry department--just that old woman standing there who insisted on showing you the rings”. We all just looked at one another. As I sat eating my soup, my father said to my husband and my sister’s husband, “Go get a shovel. We’re going for a ride.” My dad, my husband and my brother-in-law all jumped into my dad’s truck, with the ring in the plastic bag, and took off down the road. They were gone for about two hours. When they returned, my husband told me they had driven far away to a deserted wooded area and then buried the ring with a wooden cross my dad made from wood in the truck. They even stopped at our pastor’s house and had the wooden cross blessed on the way to bury the ring. Once far enough into the woods, they dug a deep hole and then placed the ring, still inside the bag, into the hole with the cross on top of it. They then buried all of it together.

I woke up the next day and felt almost completely well. I was very frightened by this experience. That fear would last for years. I had no idea how I ended up with that ring. I had no idea why anyone would want my cheaper ring. Most of all, I was terrified by the realization that somebody’s “imposter” ring seemed to make me so deathly ill.

We talked often about this strange event. It was an odd happening that did not seem to belong in my simple, ordinary life. It could have been a coincidence--the ring and my illness. None of us could explain why someone had exchanged my cheap ring for the more expensive one. Who would do this? Why would anyone want to do this--and how did they pull it off without my knowledge? To this day these questions remain unanswered. I do know I became a more careful observer of both people and places from that point forward. I also refused to go back to that department store ever again.

Beware of what is around you. It is a strange world filled with many unexplained events. ♥

The Extinct Human Species That Was Smarter Than Us

Sometimes I think my head is so big because it is so full of dreams,” says John Merrick in the play The Elephant Man. He might have been speaking for the Boskops, an almost forgotten group of early humans who lived in southern Africa between 30,000 and 10,000 years ago. Judging from fossil remains, scientists say the Boskops were similar to modern humans but had small, childlike faces and huge melon heads that held brains about 30 percent larger than our own.

That’s what fascinates psychiatrist Gary Lynch and cognitive scientist Richard Granger. “Just as we’re smarter than apes, they were probably smarter than us,” they speculate. More insightful and self-reflective than modern humans, with fantastic memories and a penchant for dreaming, the Boskops may have had “an internal mental life literally beyond anything we can imagine.” Lynch and Granger base their characterization on our current understanding of how the human brain works, describing in detail its physiology and structure and comparing it with the brains of other primates. They also explore what the Boskops’ big brains tell us about evolution (why didn’t they survive?) and about the future of human intelligence (can we engineer bigger brains?). These are questions, one suspects, that even the smallest-brained Boskop would have approved of.

Five Reasons Why Aliens Will Make Contact with the Japanese First

I've been thinking about extraterrestrials a lot this week. Do they exist? How will we know? Who will they call if they decide to make contact with us, and through what medium? First off, nobody knows if extraterrestrials really exist. Organizations like SETI are banking on the high possibility that they do, but to date there is no concrete evidence to prove or disprove this. For the purposes of contemplation, though, let's just assume they do. If aliens decide to make contact with Earthlings, they'll probably want to contact the Japanese using prime numbers and laser pulses. Call me biased (I was born and raised in Japan), but I think there is a really good possibility that this will be the case (and so does the guy who writes alien messages for SETI). And I don't just think this because I spent my childhood watching reenactments of UFO sightings on Japanese TV while eating fried noodles out of a giant UFO-shaped bowl aptly named "UFO Yakisoba."
Here are five reasons why aliens might reach out to humankind via the islands of Japan first.

1. The Japanese are ready to greet them. Part of Defense Minister Shigeru Ishiba's national security strategy includes musings about how we'd respond to an alien attack under a pacifist constitution. Late last year, he told the press:
If they descended, saying 'People on Earth, let's make friends,' it would not be considered an unjust attack on our country. And there is another issue of how can we convey our intentions if we don't understand what they are saying. We should consider various possibilities.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Nobutaka Machimura has also stated his firm belief that extraterrestrials do exist. The Japanese government has detailed official guidelines on what to do if we do indeed come in contact with extraterrestrials.
You could make the counterargument that the Japanese government's heightened fear of alien attacks may deter extraterrestrials from landing there, I actually think that aliens will feel more at ease knowing that the Japanese are at least aware of and ready for their arrival. What's the fun in arriving at a party where nobody knows who you are?

2. We emailed them. In 1983, Japanese astronomers sent a radio message to Altair—a solar system 16 light years away—with 13 binary-encoded images 71 by 71 pixels each showing some basic facts about us, like where our planet is located, what humans look like, the structure of DNA, and the basic chemistry of life on earth. If someone on Altair had received this message, then we can expect a reply as early as 2015.
"When constructing a message to extraterrestrials, it's important that we make it a message that represents the diversity of human cultures," says Douglas Vakoch, Director of Interstellar Message Composition at SETI. "It makes sense to start with science because ET doesn't speak English or Japanese or Swahili, but I'm going to be very disappointed if the only thing we hear from ET is that 2+2=4. I want to know what they think is important in their world."
Messages sent to aliens—including the 1983 Japanese one—are written in prime numbers because it's a concept that intelligent species universally understand. A similar message was sent in 1974 from the world's largest radio telescope in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, but this one was sent to a cluster of stars 25,000 light years away. We won't be hearing back from those aliens for a while. But the Altair-bound message holds promise to return within our lifetimes.

3. Japan has one of the only observatories that is actively seeking optical frequencies from outer space. Most observatories search only for radio frequencies. Even after Nobel Prize-winning physicist Charles Townes suggested looking for brief laser pulses for alien detection in the sixties, people ruled it out because it was too expensive and energy-consuming. Nishiharima is the only place that's currently scanning the skies for nanosecond-level pulses in the air waves. "I think it's very reasonable that the first detection of life beyond earth could happen in Japan," says Vakoch. "Brief pulses are like morse code. You can send an enormous amount of information very quickly. If someone could text message ET, it'll be Nishiharima. That assumes, of course, that we can decode what they were trying to say."
4. Japan will soon have AIs that match alien intelligence. Aliens are supposedly infinitely more advanced and brainy than humans are, so the most likely scenario is that, when they get here, they'll want to talk to AIs. Since the Japanese have already figured out how to navigate virtual worlds with brain power and have robots assisting humans in everyday life, it would surprise nobody if aliens showed up there first.

5. North Korea knows things the rest of us don't. North Korea is rumored to have recently released a statement claiming that their nuclear reactor has the dual capability of communicating wirelessly with alien species up to 1,000 light years away in real time. Of course, we can't believe everything that the North Korean government says, but seriously, I wouldn't be surprised at all if they were already communicating with other planets. If that's the case, it should be relatively easy for Japan, a neighboring country, to intercept their signals with laser pulses and let the world know definitively what Kim Jong Il has known for decades—that there is life beyond Earth.

But we do have evidence of their visiting already.I don't know where you got the idea we don't.An organisation called the Disclosure Project gathered 400+ witnesses with some darn good evidence that we have been visited, including bodies, crashed pieces of saucers, etc...I would like to invite you to visit the website and get the book called Disclosure and Hidden-Truth Forbidden Knowledge. Get it translated in Japanese :)http://www.DisclosureProject.orgRichard LalancetteOntario, Canada

Dear Richard,I imagine since I did not write this article I can only think your remarks are pointed at its author. It is fully understood ,that all the stories that are written by me are from personal experience with this subject. I can only sort out from your comments that you would like the author of this article to see your comments. I will forward them to him. As for me, not only do I believe, I have been there! thank you Chris Holly

History's Most Overlooked Mysteries

Though many of life's great mysteries remain unsolved, there are some lesser known ones that also have stumped researchers for centuries. While grand enigmas such as Egypt's great pyramids, Stonehenge, the Shroud of Turin and the downfall of Rome have garnered widespread interest, here are some perennial riddles that remain just as puzzling.

Considered the other "Easter Island mystery," Rongorongo is the hieroglyphic script used by the region's early inhabitants. While no other neighboring oceanic people possessed a written language, Rongorongo appeared mysteriously in the 1700s. However, the language was lost--along with the best hopes for deciphering it--after early European colonizers banned it because of ties to the islanders' pagan roots.

9.Lost City of Helike
Greek writer Pausanias gave an account of how, in one night, an earthquake destroyed the city of Helike. Moments later, a tsunami swept away what remained of the once-flourishing metropolis, which had been a worship center devoted to earth shaker and God of the sea, Poseidon. No trace of the legendary society existed outside of ancient Greek texts until 1861 when an archaeologist found Helike loot--a bronze coin with the unmistakable head of Poseidon. In 2001, a pair of archaeologists located the ruins of Helike beneath coastal mud and gravel and are now working to unearth what some consider the "real" Atlantis.

8. The Bog Bodies
Even CSI's best efforts wouldn't go very far in solving the mystery of the bog bodies. Hundreds of these ancient corpses have been discovered buried around the northern wetlands of Europe. Researchers who inspected the remains have reported tell-tale signs of torture and medieval foul play. Such gruesome clues have some suspecting that the dead were the victims of ritual sacrifice.

7. Fall of the Minoans
While many historians have figuring out what caused the collapse of the Roman Empire pretty high up on their to-do lists, the fall of the Minoan empire has proved just as puzzling. Three and a half millenniums ago, life on the island of Crete--which boasted a mythical King and his man-eating beast--was disrupted by a volcanic eruption at neighboring Thera Island. Clay tablets unearthed by archaeologists revealed that, instead of folding, Minoans carried on for another 50 years before finally packing it in. Theories of what finally did them in include a scenario in which subsequent volcanic ash cover devastated harvests and one where a weakened society was left vulnerable to an eventual Greek takeove

6. The Carnac Stones
If erecting Stonehenge seemed to have been a tremendous groan, think about how backbreaking it must have been for builders of the Carnac stones. On the coast of Brittany in northwestern France are over 3,000 megalithic standing stones arranged in perfect lines and spread out over 12 kilometers. The local myth is that a Roman legion was on the march when the wizard Merlin turned them into stone. A more rational stab at an explanation by a researcher who studied the stones purported that the stones may likely be an elaborate earthquake detector. The identity of the Neolithic people who built them is unknown.

5.Who Was Robin Hood?
The existence of a forest-dwelling altruistic bandit may be more plausible then a legendary king with a magical sword. However, the historical manhunt for the real-life Robin Hood has turned up entire scrolls of possibilities. Candidates include a fugitive in Yorkshire by the name of Robert Hod, who went by Hobbehod as well as a Robert Hood of Wakefield. The list of suspects was also complicated by the name "Robin Hood" eventually becoming synonymous with being an outlaw, as in the case of William Le Fevre who's surname was later changed to Robehod, according to medieval court records. His identity would later get murkier as the tales' authors wove more characters such as Prince John and Richard the Lionheart into the story.

4.The Lost Roman Legion
After the Parthians of Persia defeated underachieving Roman General Crassus' army, legend has it that a small band of POWs wandered through the desert and were eventually rounded up by the Han military. First century Chinese historian Ban Gu wrote an account of a confrontation with a strange army that fought in a "fish-scale formation" unique to Roman forces. An Oxford historian compared ancient records and claimed that the lost roman legion founded a small town near the Gobi desert named Liqian, which in Chinese translates to Rome. DNA tests are being conducted to settle that claim and hopefully explain some of the residents' green eyes, blond hair, and fondness of bullfighting.

3.The Voynich Manuscript
The Voynich manuscript might be the most unreadable book in the world. The 500-year-old relic, which was found in 1912 at a library in Rome, consists of 240 pages of illustrations and writing in a language not known to anyone. Deciphering the text has eluded even the best cryptographers, leading some to dismiss the book as an entertaining but lengthy hoax. But a statistical analysis of the writing shows that the manuscript does seem to follow the basic structure and laws of a working language.

2.The Tarim Mummies
During an excavation beneath the Tarim Basin of western China, archaeologists were surprised to discover more than 100 mummified corpses that dated back 2000 years. But Victor Mair, a college professor, was downright stupefied when he came skull-to-skull with some of the blonde-haired and long nosed Tarim mummies that were later displayed at a museum. So in 1993, Mair returned to collect DNA samples and test results validated his hunch that the bodies were of European genetic stock. While Ancient Chinese texts from as early as the first millennium BC do describe groups of far-east dwelling Caucasian people, there is no mention of how or why these people ended up there.

1.Disappearance of the Indus Valley Civilization
With a culture that stretched from western India to Afghanistan and a population numbering over five million, the ancient Indus Valley people--India's oldest known civilization--were an impressive and apparently sanitary bronze-age bunch. The scale of their baffling and abrupt collapse rivals that of the great Mayan decline. But it wasn't until 1922 that excavations revealed a hygienically-advanced culture which maintained a sophisticated sewage drainage system and immaculate bathrooms. Strangely, there is no archaeological evidence of armies, slaves, social conflicts or other vices prevalent in ancient societies. Even to the very end, it seems, they kept it clean.
